Practice
Before we get started painting our house, first we need to practice finding the surface area. Remember to use the scratch pad to help you work out your answers to each problem. When you complete the practice you may move on to the next step!
Step 1:
Find the surface area of your living room which is 6 ft x 8 ft x 12 ft . Then determine the surface area of the living room that you would paint (hint: don't paint the carpet!)
Oh, but wait! I forgot to show you where the windows and doors are, you wouldn't paint THOSE, would you? You have two identical, square windows on the exterior wall and one door that leads into the kitchen. Now, what is the surface area of the living room you would paint?
Step 2:
One quart of paint covers about 100 square feet. Using your answer from above, how many quarts of paint will you need to purchase?
Step 3:
Now for the fun part, using the home improvement websites under the "Resources" tab pick out the paint you would like to purchase. You must use indoor paint, but all other choices (color, sheen, brand) are up to you. Be sure that you purchase enough paint to cover the room (you wouldn't want to run out) but not too much extra so that you stay within budget. You have $50 to spend on paint, but don't forget anything you buy has 8% sales tax!
Before you submit your work, be sure to check out the "Evaluation" tab and be sure you will get your best possible score BEFORE you submit your work to me.
Note: You will also be required to turn in a hard copy of your work to me so that I can see the mathematical processes you used. Remember, no calculators!
